As the Queensland heat finally starts to dip, we aren’t the only ones looking for a cozy spot to settle in. Autumn is the "Great Migration" for local spiders. From the notorious Redback to the startling (but harmless) Huntsman, spiders are currently on the move, looking for mates and warmth inside your wall voids, roof spaces, and even your shoes.
Want to keep your home a "No Trace" zone for eight-legged intruders? Follow this 5-step DIY guide to spider-proofing your property this month.
Step 1: The "No-Go" Perimeter
Spiders love bridge-ways. If you have garden mulch, shrubs, or tree branches touching your external walls, you’ve basically built a highway into your home.
- The Fix: Trim all vegetation back at least 30cm from your walls. Switch from organic mulch to decorative stone near the slab to discourage nesting.
Step 2: Seal the Entry Points
Queensland homes are built for airflow, but a 2mm gap under a door is a front-row invitation for a spider.
- The Fix: Check your weather strips and door snakes. If you can see daylight under your door, a spider can get in. Use fine mesh on weep holes—this allows the house to breathe while keeping the pests out.
Step 3: Declutter the "Danger Zones"
Spiders (especially Redbacks) love "dry, dark, and undisturbed." This means your garage, under-stair storage, and the toy pile on the back deck.
- The Fix: Use plastic clip-top bins instead of cardboard boxes. Cardboard attracts silverfish and cockroaches—the favorite snacks of hungry spiders.

Step 4: Lighting Logic
Spiders don't care about your porch light, but their dinner does. Bright white lights attract moths and flies, which then spin webs across your doorways.
- The Fix: Swap your outdoor bulbs for yellow "bug lights" or motion-sensor LEDs. Fewer bugs = fewer spiders.
Step 5: The "Web-Out" Technique
If you see a web, don't just spray it. Removing the web is a psychological deterrent for the spider.
- The Fix: Use a broom or "cobweb duster" to remove webs weekly. If the spider has to rebuild every night, it will eventually move to your neighbor’s yard instead!
While these steps help, DIY sprays from the hardware store often only work on contact. They don't reach the "Source"—the thousands of eggs tucked away in your roof void or the deep cracks in your brickwork.
